Recently, I had a case where a patient spilled hot wax form a jar into her leg. From below the knee to the ankle, large blisters, fluid filled formed within minutes. Pain was very severe. At emmergency room she just got ibuprofen and was asked to see a wound care specialist. The primary doctor recommended grafts.
In the unfortunate case that you have a burn, seek specialist care as soon as possible. In this peticular case, we tried to save all the available skin from the blisters and use it as a natural graft. This way, there is no rejection, minimal pain, no cost, time to heal greatly reduced.
So what we did, we evacuated the blisters of the extra fluid extremly careful to save the roof of the blisters. Apply a specialized dressing that is impregnated with medication- to prevent sticking to the wound when we had to remove the dressing and also to prevent infections. Also apply cast padding to absorb any drainage that forms and moderate two layer compression to foot. The pain was controlled with medication orally .
Two visits it took for the large blisters to collapse and the new skin to regenerate under the oclusive dressing. The patient was able to return to work within days of the second dressing. After the removal of the second dressing, patient can take care of the leg and follow up is minimal. One lucky patient...
